How this site started

Perfect Pour Guide started the way most good coffee habits do: with a bad cup. A pour-over that tasted like ashtray water, a French press that turned every mug muddy, and a stack of gear reviews online that all read like they'd been written by the same person who had never actually held a gooseneck kettle.

We started testing brew methods side by side — same beans, same day, different techniques — and writing down what actually changed the cup. That habit became this site. Every guide here is written from notes taken at the counter, not from a spec sheet.

What we believe about home coffee brewing

  • Good coffee doesn't require expensive gear. A $20 dripper and a kitchen scale will out-brew a $400 machine used carelessly.
  • Consistency beats intuition. The single biggest jump in cup quality comes from measuring water and coffee by weight, not by eyeballing it.
  • Video shows what text can't. Pour speed, bloom timing, and grind texture are visual — so wherever we can, we show the brew instead of just describing it.
  • Reviews should say what's actually true — including when a popular product isn't worth the price.

How we test and review gear

When we review a dripper, grinder, or kettle, we brew with it repeatedly over at least two weeks, using the same beans and the same base recipe we'd use for any other method, so comparisons are fair. We look at:

  • Consistency — does the device produce a similar cup brew after brew?
  • Ease of use — could a first-time buyer figure it out without a manual?
  • Cleanup — how much of a chore is it, realistically, on a weekday morning?
  • Value — is it worth the price relative to the alternatives we've tested?

Some of the products we mention are linked through affiliate programs, which means we may earn a small commission if you buy through our link, at no extra cost to you. That relationship never determines which products we recommend — see our full affiliate disclosure for details.

Where we're headed

Three things are on our roadmap for this site: more embedded video walkthroughs for every guide, a comment section so readers can share their own brew notes and troubleshooting tips, and more free tools like our coffee ratio calculator so you have something to use, not just something to read.
